Visiting Durham Hens

What you need to know before you visit

Whether you're coming to collect your new hens, pick up an order, buy poultry supplies or visit our shop, you're very welcome at Durham Hens.

We're a family-run poultry business in the County Durham countryside, and we welcome everyone from experienced poultry keepers to people buying their very first chickens.

Here are a few useful things to know before you set off.

Finding us

Our postcode is DL13 4BN.

We're the only property with this postcode, so entering DL13 4BN into your sat-nav should bring you directly to us.

Parking

There's parking available on site, with plenty of room to turn around.

We have turning space for vehicles up to 6-wheel HGVs, so don't worry if you're arriving with a large vehicle, trailer or horsebox.

Our parking area is close to the shop.

Accessibility

Our parking area and shop are wheelchair accessible.

If you have particular accessibility requirements or there's something you'd like to check before visiting, please get in touch. We'll always do our best to help.

Please leave your dogs at home

We're sorry, but dogs are not allowed on the Durham Hens site.

We know dogs are part of the family, but with poultry and other animals on site, we need to keep them safely at home.

Visiting the shop

Our shop is open:

Friday & Saturday
10 am – 4 pm

You'll find a range of poultry supplies and equipment in the shop.

If you're making a special journey for a particular product, we recommend checking our website first for current availability.

Buying hens, chicks and other poultry

Our available poultry changes regularly, so if you're looking for a particular breed, please check our website before travelling to see what's currently available.

You'll also find information about our different breeds and the poultry we sell on the website.

If you're new to keeping chickens, don't hesitate to ask questions. We're very used to helping people who are just getting started.

Click & Collect

If you've placed an online order, you can choose your collection day and time at checkout.

Click & Collect is available:

Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday & Saturday
10 am – 4 pm

Orders placed before 12 noon can be collected the same day.

If you've already booked a collection and realise you'll be late, don't panic. As long as you can reach us before 4 pm, that's fine.

If you won't be able to arrive before 4 pm, please contact us so that we can rearrange your collection.

Please note that customers cannot change an existing collection themselves through the website. If you need to rearrange an existing collection, please contact us.

Collecting hens

If you're collecting hens or cockerels, please make sure you have suitable arrangements for transporting them safely home.

If you're collecting hens, we offer cardboard poultry boxes for £2 each, with up to four hens per box.

In hot weather, please keep your car cool on the way home.

Collecting chicks

If you're collecting chicks, we supply boxes to take them home.

In cool weather, please keep your car warm on the way home.

A little bit of Durham Hens

We're in a rural location, and we're a working poultry business rather than a conventional high-street shop. There may be plenty going on when you arrive—but that's all part of Durham Hens!

Whether you're an experienced poultry keeper or you've never owned a chicken before, we'll do our best to make your visit straightforward and enjoyable.

Have a question before you visit?
